i cherish your soulful absurity...the W day, the uber-woman weekend, the red & gold splendor of amazing characters, and the hours of the creative improv will live forever in my heart...thank you for letting me honor you both in your love...

here is the poem i wrote & read as a toast at the reception...my version of your tumble into united life...

A Country Beginning

To get him to Point Arena, you promised naked pillow fights
and a Saturday night cocktail party outside on the sloping, heal eating lawn
I don't remember whose car navigated
the winding, crumbling Pacific to get here
but I do know it was you who brought along
glittering costumes, bags of food, good booze, glamorous girls and boys
an ex-boyfriend familiar enough to seem current

when you arrived with your arms full, I took you into the kitchen
and asked if you were newly in love; you said no, I pretended to believe you
your gait as light as your song as I snaked you, two girl chaperons, your X
and your unacknowledged-husband-to-be down a slender path
through redwood and pine, the ends of sleeping bags
dragging along behind you, early fall duff hanging from dark blue corners

I put the gang of you in the Big Top Boudoir together
Pedro's electricity free canvas B & B
gave you a flashlight, a kerosene lantern
offered to light the pot bellied stove when the sun went down
diverted with trapeze contortions
in my white sequined ball gown

it was labor day weekend, and we neglected to mention
the event that brought us together, not this year
but in years past, the confluence of same
where creative minds gathered to participate
in the survival of our kind

as fog crept around our vodka tumblers and laughter intensified
you and he challenged, bickered, agreed, teased, until finally,
he brought out pillows and held you to your word
your band of women plunging into super hero
stripping down to everything but sox and shoes
(which we needed for leverage) and the bashing began
breasts, balls and feathers flying until the Point Arena cyber alien
peered through the curtain less window with his digital camera
sobered us into realizing our moment could live much longer than now

yet the absurdity went on
as did your flirting, your denial of your flirting
my tacit agreement to ignore your protesting-too-much to my bantering probes

it must have been a month or two
after Monday morning came
and you all left me alone in the silence of the woods
long enough for us to fly to Vegas
for Lorianne's bride-to-be retreat
long enough for four planes to crash
change our American lives forever
for you and he to perform three wedding ceremonies
spend countless hours of semi-platonic conversation
a month or two when you called
told me the news about your whispering core
how someone could finally hear it

Well, the mere suggestion of this event was automatically amazing, so I drove north in my old "Jungle(Bug)Truck" all night to try to make it because, of course, I wanted to witness & participate in it actually BEING the amazing event that it promised to be and in fact WAS. I did have obstacles to overcome, as one does whenever there IS an amazing event to be had or seen or done...... (stuff like a bit of pneumonia, & my fake-son/escort/driver "Fafner" mysteriously disappearing at very last minute in Silverlake SavOn parking-lot)...... But I'm so glad that at least I made it up there by 8:30 AM, just in time to see the hard-working, magnificent Doggie Diner Heads being driven home, smiling madly & beneficently upon all. I LOVED the reception, felt actually honored to have a rib slightly bruised in the center of the "California Uber Alles" mosh pit, had a heck of a lot of fun and champers with friends, and thought, "YEAH! Now THAT'S living some REAL LIFE!"
So, John & Christina, please DO live lots & lots of REAL and GOOD LIFE!!! Thanks for inviting me, and much love to you always.

I don't know what to say. Sign the guestbook. What do I have to say to a guestbook that will be kept for years as a document of J & C's wedding? Shurely I won't say the right thing. So I went searching for a quote from a famous person. Ya know, someone smarter than me. Someone who would know what to say. I'd put that quote here in the guestbook. That will be a good contrabution. After pouring through books of quotations and reading literally thousands of quotes on marrage, love, men and women and bridges I just gave up. There isn't one appropriate. None were applicable. Not one would belong here. Because... as Oscar Wilde once said:

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation --

...and clearly this is not the case.

Thank you both for not being 'most' people.
And thank you for a most memerable day.

Since y'all have been asking...

Recipe for Harblaw/Lawbridge Stew

First you start with 3 giant doggie diner dog heads.
then you add 1 hula hoop
1 neon tube from a clock tower secret hide-out
1/2 cup of orange polka dots
1 hanging santa
1 teaspoon 'Essence of Betty Page'
a carabineer & a bolt from a suspension bridge
2 cups business acumen
1 part each of chaos, cacophony & dark saturnalia
1 pint of joie de vivre
1 ounce of chivalry
1 cup family loyalty
a pinch of paranoia
a dash of glamour
and then mix in a whole lot of dedication and love

Combine all ingredients. Pre-heat for 2 1/2 years, then add entire mixture to The Golden Gate Bridge and start cooking at dawn on leap day 2004. Bring to a boil with several hundred of your closest friends and then simmer for life.

We love you.
